Solo Portrait Session at Seixal Beach, Madeira. September 2025

Seixal is one of the few beaches in Madeira where the geography works for you before you do anything. The cliffs come straight down into the water. The sand is black. A small waterfall drops off the rock face at the far end of the beach. At 9am, the sun hasn’t cleared the ridge yet, and the light that gets through comes in flat and even, with no hard shadows.

Emilia flew in from the UK. The session was for social media content, two looks, one morning.

Two Looks, One Beach

The first look was a deep red halter dress. Red on black sand with grey-green cliffs behind is a combination that doesn’t need much help from the light. We worked the waterline: standing in the surf, arms up, facing into the haze coming off the Atlantic. Seixal is enclosed enough that the light bounces off the cliff faces and fills the shadows, which meant the portraits had texture without needing direct sun.

The second look was black. Sheer fabric, completely different energy. We moved to the waterfall end of the beach, where the rock is darker and the vegetation comes down the cliff face. The waterfall at Seixal is small enough to stand beside and dramatic enough to matter in a frame.

The last sequence was in the water. She went in. Wet black dress on black sand, lying in the shallows with the cliff and the Atlantic behind her. That’s the kind of thing that either works completely or doesn’t work at all.

Seixal for Solo Sessions

Most people who ask about Seixal are thinking about it for couples or families. It works for those. But a solo session here has something different available: the scale of the location against a single person. One person, cliffs that go straight up 200 meters, black sand, Atlantic. The proportions are unusual, and they show in photographs.

The beach is quiet early. By mid-morning it fills up. A 9am start gives you an hour or more of the place to yourself, which is what a session like this needs.
