Couples Photography at Praia Formosa, Funchal, Madeira. March 2026

A couples session on the volcanic rocks at Praia Formosa, Funchal. March sunset light, an hour on location, two people from the UK on a few days in Madeira.

The rocks along the Funchal seafront catch the last hour of light differently from the beach itself. The angle is lower, the color warmer. There’s enough texture in the volcanic stone to give frames something to work with. Emi and Oli flew in from the UK with a few days in Madeira before heading south. We met at Praia Formosa as the sun was dropping toward the Atlantic.

The Session

The volcanic rocks west of the main beach were quiet that evening, which made it easier to find spots without people walking into the background. The light came from the side. Low, warm, catching them as they sat watching the water. I didn’t direct much in the first 20 minutes. Walked them across the rocks, let them find their footing, let the conversation settle. The session loosened after that.

March light on Madeira doesn’t last long. By 7pm it shifts fast, and the color changes every few minutes. We had about 45 minutes of good light. That’s enough for a short session if you’re not trying to cover too much ground.

The second half moved down to the pebble beach. Different light by then, flatter, but the texture of the stones and the open horizon still gave something to work with. They were more relaxed by that point, which showed.

Why Praia Formosa Works for Couples

Praia Formosa isn’t the location people picture first when they think of Madeira. It doesn’t have the drama of Cabo Girão or the atmosphere of Fanal Forest. What it has is access and timing. It’s ten minutes from the city center, easy to park, no long trail before the session starts. For couples arriving from overseas and staying in Funchal, that practicality matters.

The volcanic rock formations along the coast photograph better than the location descriptions suggest. The uneven terrain, the way rocks frame two people sitting together, the Atlantic stretching behind. These things show up in photos even when they don’t read on a map.

Sunset is the right time. Morning light here is fine but flat. The evening sessions, roughly 6:30 to 8pm depending on the month, are when this location earns its place.

Planning a Couples Session in Madeira

This was a short session, about an hour on location. One spot, no moving between locations, no tight schedule. Emi and Oli wanted something relaxed on their last evening in Funchal. That’s exactly what a short session is for.

If you’re planning a trip to Madeira and want photos from it, Praia Formosa works well as a starting point. It’s also a good second location in a longer session that begins somewhere further from the city.
