Praia Formosa

Funchal's main beach. Dark sand, ocean views, coastal promenade nearby. Not the most dramatic location on the island, but the most practical: 10 minutes from the city center, easy parking, facilities close.

Good starting point for families with young children, or as a second location in an extended session that starts further west.

I shoot here more than anywhere else on the island. The sun drops behind the cliff at the western end and lights the whole beach sideways for the last hour. You park and start shooting five minutes later. When the weather turns you are ten minutes from town instead of an hour.

The beach has two distinct zones and most sessions use both. The volcanic rocks at the western end give height, texture and natural framing, and they break the wind enough for close portraits. The open pebbles and waterline are for movement: walking, running, going barefoot into the surf. Sea foam here takes evening colour better than the rock does, warm pink under a cloud bank and cool blue in the shadows on the same frame.

Timing shifts hard with the season. In December the light starts pulling gold across the water by five, and you get roughly forty usable minutes before it goes. In late April sunset is around eight and the best part is often after the sun has already dropped, when the sky turns flat pink. In midsummer you are shooting past nine.

The weather here changes inside an hour. I photographed a proposal one May evening that had sun, drizzle and cloud in the same session.
