Elopement photographer on Madeira

An elopement is a wedding with nobody but the two of you. No guests and no seating plan. The registry office in Funchal, or a ceremony for two, and the rest of the day is yours.

I photograph it the way I photograph any wedding. I learn the plan beforehand, I know where the light will be.

Where to photograph

I plan the route around the ceremony and the light. These are the places I would start from.

  • Miradouro do Guindaste →

A clifftop on the north coast near Faial, about forty minutes from Funchal, with a straight drop to the Atlantic. The platform is small, which suits two people.

  • Câmara de Lobos →

A working fishing village ten minutes west of Funchal. Pushpa and Pedro married here in June 2026, above the fishing boats. Morning or evening both work.

  • Ponta de São Lourenço →

The widest place I shoot: bare rock, and cliffs falling into the water on both sides. The wind is constant. A long dress either looks extraordinary here or becomes unmanageable.

  • Fanal Forest →

An hour out on the north coast, laurel trees centuries old. I shoot it late in the day. It is also wet, cold and muddy.

  • Funchal Old Town →

Cobbled streets and painted doors, all on foot. Best early in the morning or in the early evening, outside the hours when the streets are full.

If other people at the spot are what worries you, I wrote down what each place is like. Crowds and privacy, place by place →

Time of day

We always agree on the start time individually, depending on the goals of the shoot and your wishes. On the south coast the sun goes behind the mountains before the official sunset, so the golden part of the evening ends earlier than a weather app says it will.

Tell me the date and the time of the ceremony, and I plan the rest of the day around the light.

Weddings before Madeira

I have been photographing weddings for 18 years, on this island and before it. Most of the earlier ones were in Thailand. A few old photos from the past:

Bride in a long dress on an empty beach under a heavy grey sky
Bride looking into the camera through a lifted veil, close portrait
Bride holding her bouquet, face framed by a sheer veil
