Câmara de Lobos

A working fishing village 10 minutes west of Funchal. Colorful fishing boats in the harbor, narrow streets, old men mending nets. Winston Churchill painted here.

It is still a working harbour. Boats get painted because they go out, nets get mended because they get used, and the men on the front are not there for anyone's camera.

At street level there is the square with red umbrellas strung across it, painted hulls at close range, narrow streets and doorways. Everything is textured and close.

Then there are the steps. A staircase climbs from the village up the hillside, and not everyone says yes to it. The people who do get the whole of Câmara de Lobos below them: harbour, boats, houses stacked up the slope.

Above and around the village there are corners most visitors never reach. Odd angles, unexpected views back down.

Ten minutes west of Funchal, easy parking. Morning or evening both work: the harbour faces south, so midday goes hard and bright while early and late light stays kind to faces. Wear shoes you can climb steps in if you want the view from above.
