A Photoshoot at Praia Formosa, Funchal's City Beach

Seven sessions on Funchal's dark-sand beach in nine months, two of them proposals. Light by season, the two zones of the beach, parking and what to wear.

I photograph at Praia Formosa more than anywhere else on Madeira. Seven sessions here have gone up on this site between December and August, and two of them were proposals.

It is not the most dramatic place on the island. Fanal is stranger, Seixal is wilder, the clifftop viewpoints are higher. Praia Formosa wins on something else: you park, walk two minutes.

Why this beach gets picked

It sits ten minutes from the centre of Funchal.

You come off a flight and want photos the same evening. You have small children and cannot spend an hour in a car each way. The forecast is unstable and you want to stay near town in case it turns. All three end up here.

The sun drops behind the cliff at the western end and lights the whole beach sideways for the last hour before it goes.

The rocks and the waterline at Praia Formosa

Most sessions here use both halves of the place.

The volcanic rocks at the western end. Height, texture, natural framing. They also break the wind, which is why close portraits happen there when the coast gets rough. Mike and Amelie’s proposal happened on the boulders with the sea stack behind them.

The open pebbles and the waterline. This half is for movement. Walking, running, going barefoot into the surf. Sea foam takes evening colour better than the rock does: warm pink under a cloud bank and cool blue in the shadows, sometimes in the same frame.

Start on the rocks while the sun is still up, finish at the water when it drops. That order works nine times out of ten.

Sunset times at Praia Formosa by season

December. Gold starts pulling across the water by five, and you get roughly forty usable minutes before it goes. Saket and Sneha had their session two days before Christmas.

Spring. Sunset moves out to around eight in late April, and the best part is often after the sun has already dropped, when the sky turns the flat pink Madeira does at that time of year.

Midsummer. You are shooting past nine. Dinner happens late on the day of your session, so plan for it.

Whatever the month, we agree on the start time individually, depending on the goals of the shoot and your wishes.

Proposals at Praia Formosa

Two of the seven sessions here were proposals.

Praia Formosa is a public city beach. Nobody looks twice at a photographer on it, and nobody looks twice at a couple walking down to the water. That means the person being proposed to has no reason to suspect anything until the moment happens.

Mike and Amelie came for what she believed was a normal couples shoot. Carlos went down on one knee on the pebbles in August with a sailboat crossing the horizon behind them.

If you are planning one, the proposal guide covers the cover story and the timing in more detail.

With children

Sara’s family came in May with kids in tow.

Toilets and cafes are on the promenade, a minute away. Parking is beside the beach. If a child melts down, you are ten minutes from your apartment rather than an hour over the mountains.

The sand is dark and coarse, closer to fine gravel than to powder, so it brushes off skin more easily than the black sand at Seixal does. Bring water shoes for the pebbled stretch if small feet are involved.

What to wear on dark sand

The ground here eats beige and pale grey the same way Seixal does. What reads: white, cream, deep red, denim, olive.

Avi and Nata and Rylie and Abby both went with light tones against the dark ground.

Go barefoot on the sand. Bring shoes you can walk on wet rock in for the western end, because the boulders are slick after any rain.

Practical details

Parking is free beside the beach and fills up on sunny weekends. Evening sessions rarely have a problem with it.

The water is rougher here than it looks from the promenade. If we go in, we go in at the shallow end and I tell you when a set is coming.

The weather changes inside an hour on this coast. One May evening here had sun, drizzle and cloud in the same session.

Booking it

A Short session covers this beach properly: one location, an hour. Families usually take Classic for the extra room.
