Couples Photography at Praia Formosa, Funchal, Madeira. May 2026
A windy May golden hour at Praia Formosa with Rylie and Abby from Canada. Wave spray, pink dusk clouds, an hour we did not plan for.

The wind picked up about ten minutes after we met at the rocks west of the main beach. By the time we walked down to the wet sand, gusts were coming straight off the Atlantic and the cloud bank to the south had gone from white to that strange pink that happens at Praia Formosa in late spring. Rylie and Abby flew in from Canada with a few days in Madeira before their trip moved on. We had golden hour, one location, and no plan to leave the water alone.

The Session
Most people booking a couples session ask about the weather. Wind on the south coast in May is the honest answer: usually fine, sometimes strong. This evening it was strong. Rylie and Abby did not flinch when the spray started reaching their feet. That made a difference. The frames that came out of the next hour were not the ones I would have got if we had stayed dry.
About halfway in, a larger wave came over the rocks behind them and the foam pushed up the sand fast enough that they ran. That moment is the cover image. It is also the kind of frame you can’t plan for. You can put two people in the right spot and trust the ocean to do the rest.
Later in the session another wave caught them properly. They were laughing about it in the next frame. I like sessions like that. The ones where the thing you were worried about becomes the thing you remember.

Why Praia Formosa Works for Couples in Wind
Sea foam at Praia Formosa picks up sunset color in a way the rocks alone don’t. When the light is low and the surf is up, the foam reads warm pink under the cloud bank and cool blue in the shadows. That mix is hard to find anywhere else on the south coast.
The location also gives you somewhere to retreat. The volcanic boulders at the western end break the wind enough for slower frames, close portraits, hands, faces, the kind of work that needs them to stand still for two seconds. We moved between the two zones a few times across the hour.
If you’re thinking about a session here in spring, plan for Praia Formosa sessions in the second half of the evening. The light gets interesting around an hour before sunset and the wind usually drops with it.

About This Session
This was an Extended session, 150 edited frames across about three hours on one location. We could have moved further west to a second spot, but the light and the surf were doing enough on their own. Sometimes that’s the call. Stay where it’s working.

Thank you, Rylie and Abby, for not minding the spray. The best frame of the night came from the wave you didn’t run far enough away from.
