December light in Funchal sets early. By 5pm it’s already pulling gold across the water. Saket and Sneha arrived at Praia Formosa as the sun was dropping toward the Atlantic horizon. They had a few days on the island before flying home. The engagement was recent. They wanted photos before the trip ended.

The Session

We started on the volcanic rocks at the west end of the beach. Quieter there. The rocks give you height variation, texture, natural framing. In December the sun sits lower and hits from a different angle than summer. The shadows are longer. The color comes earlier.

I asked Saket to put the ring on Sneha’s finger as if for the first time. They laughed. The second attempt was the one.

The ring shots took about ten minutes. After that we moved. The rest of the session was less formal. They ran along the shoreline, went barefoot, stepped into the surf. Sneha’s white dress caught the wind well. December is cool enough on the beach to be comfortable but warm enough to go into the water.

The light changed fast after 5:30pm. We had about 40 minutes of usable sunset. That’s typical for December at this location. The color peaks quickly and then it’s gone.

Praia Formosa for Engagement Sessions

Praia Formosa is ten minutes from Funchal city center. No long approach, easy parking, accessible at any fitness level. For couples staying in Funchal and arriving without much time to plan, that practicality matters.

The location works differently by season. Summer sessions here start later in the evening, often 7:30pm or later. In December you need to be on location by 5pm. The winter light is lower and warmer from the start. For engagement photos it often works better than summer, even if the window is shorter.

Planning an Engagement Session on Madeira

This was a short session, around an hour at one location. Right for a couple with limited time and a clear idea of what they wanted. Engagement sessions don’t need to be long. One location, good light, and two people who are comfortable with each other is enough.
